World University Games Brief
Monday, August 18, 1997
This summer, 12 UCLA student-athletes and two head coaches will embrace the warm Mediterranean sun of Sicily, Italy, not to enjoy their vacations, but to compete in the 1997 World University Summer Games. The games start today and continue until Aug. 31.
The World University Games return to Italy after having been hosted in the city of Turin in 1959 for the very first University Games. This year, three Sicilian cities, Catania, Messina and Palermo, will host the games.
The University Games, sponsored by the International University Sports Federation, are held every two years. They are held to provide a structured competitive atmosphere for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28. Much like the Olympics, there are separate summer and winter University Games. The summer competition holds venue for numerous sports in which selected UCLA athletes will represent their university and country.
This year, the United States is submitting a total of 256 athletes and 54 coaches to the University Games. The selection procedure is determined by the U.S. Olympic Committee and the U.S. Collegiate Sports Council. The UCLA athletes and coaches that are scheduled to participate in the Games are listed. Of the UCLA participants, only fencing's Elisabeth Spilman and Olympian high jumper Amy Acuff are veterans of past World University Games.
