Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down

Do we really have to wait in long lines?

Thumbs down to the new BruinCard, which is creating more hassles for Bruins. There should be a better way of phasing out the old card and bringing in the new one. The long lines for the mass carding is creating more problems than it's worth.

He's outta here

Thumbs up to NBC for firing Marv Albert, who pleaded guilty to assault charges. He made the plea in order to avoid a more serious charge of forcible sodomy. He faces a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. We fully support NBC's decision - anyone who commits sexual assault deserves tough punishment.

Community service - it's a good thing

Thumbs up to USAC President Kandea Mosely's efforts to bolster community service programs at UCLA. At last week's freshman convocation, she asked Chancellor Albert Carnesale to sign a petition to dedicate more funds to community service oriented programs. Carnesale is currently reviewing the request, but we'd like to see Mosely follow up on her request and complete her end of the bargain.

It's worth your time and money

Thumbs up to the recently launched web sites for the 1,000 courses that UCLA offers. The web pages are a valuable resource for students and are well worth the cost - ranging from $10 for social science classes to $14 for physical and life science classes. Students can now post messages and chat with classmates and their teachers on the web pages when they have any questions.
