Briefs
Two Democratic presidential primary candidates – one front-runner and one long shot – will be speaking on campus today.
John Kerry, one of the party’s two front-runners, will be speaking about foreign policy at Freud Playhouse in Macgowan Hall. Dennis Kucinich, an Ohio congressman, will be in Ackerman Grand Ballroom.
Kerry, a four-term senator from Massachusetts, is currently locked in what has essentially become a two-man race with John Edwards, a first-term senator from North Carolina, heading into the election.
Dubbed “Super Tuesday,” the March 2 election consists of primaries or caucuses in 10 states, including California, which are worth over half of the 2,162 delegates needed for a candidate to win the nomination.
California is worth 370 delegates – the most of the 10 states.
Kerry’s speech will be at 10 a.m. and is open to the public, but seating is limited. The Kerry campaign advises people to show up at 9 a.m. The UCLA Burkle Institute of International Relations is sponsoring the event.
The Kucinich event is a video conference call at noon. Kucinich will deliver a brief speech and then take questions from the audience and viewers from other campuses. The event is open to the public.
