Baseball gears up for ’SC, Pac-10 play

While the week after finals means a week free from worries for most at UCLA, the UCLA baseball team will face its real tests. The Bruins (13-8) play at struggling USC (9-12) in three non-conference games Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The following weekend, Pac-10 play begins with a jolt as 2003 College World Series runner-up No. 1 Stanford (15-3) comes to Westwood. UCLA will be coming off nine days without games due to finals. It will try to return and reclaim its play of last month, which featured a seven-game winning streak.

FOOTBALL: During a pre-trial hearing Thursday, UCLA linebacker Xavier Burgess set his trial date for April 15, city attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said. Burgess, a freshman, is charged with five misdemeanors stemming from two separate altercations with a parking enforcement officer outside of Sproul Hall. He pleaded not guilty in November.

WOMEN’S ROWING: In their season opener, the Bruins swept all five events over UC Irvine Sunday morning – varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight, and second novice eight competitions. The squad plays Saturday against Loyola Marymount and Sunday against USC.

RECRUIT UPDATE: Josh Shipp scored 22 points to lead Fairfax of Los Angeles over De La Salle of Concord 51-35 in the boys Division I state championship Saturday night. Shipp, who will attend UCLA in the fall, was only 1-of-7 from the field in the first half, but went 7-for-11 in the second half, including five 3-pointers.
