ORL a resource for on-campus residents
The Office of Residential Life places a strong emphasis on student development and academic involvement within the university’s living community.
We strive to make living on campus at UCLA as positive as possible. We emphasize community standards that support all our students as individuals. We encourage residents to become involved in their residential communities and to take on leadership roles within their residence halls. And we provide a variety of support for the academic lives of residents.
ORL sponsors a Faculty in Residence program, in which a UCLA faculty member lives in each residence hall and interacts with students outside the classroom. These faculty members develop student programs, teach seminars and meet informally with students during meals and activities.
The office also provides academic services such as drop-in tutorials, computer labs, music practice rooms, TA review sessions, study list directories and various educational programs.
We are especially proud of De Neve Auditorium, which was designed to offer the same amenities as the best lecture facilities on campus. Because of this state-of-the-art facility, UCLA can offer for-credit courses, such as the first-year General Education clusters, right here within the residential community.
A variety of programs are developed by professional and student staff working in collaboration with student groups. Programs range from All-Hill events, such as the Spring Formal, to museum field trips for 25 residents or a small-group dinner with a faculty member in residence.
ORL staff members also provide counseling services and make referrals to campus and community agencies when students need help addressing personal problems, academic issues, health matters and career concerns.
All live-in staff members are trained to respond effectively to personal emergencies such as accidents, harmful behavior and interpersonal confrontations as well as urgent facilities-related situations such as power failures, fires and earthquakes.
As a department, ORL is committed to students’ development and learning. The department continually strives to provide an outstanding residential living and learning experience to residents and an invaluable leadership opportunity to staff and student leaders.
