U.S. Under-21 Team wins with help of UCLA’s Jill Oakes

The U.S. Under-21 Women’s National Team opened the 2004 Nordic Cup with a 3-0 win over Finland. UCLA defender Jill Oakes helped set up the first goal by making a long pass to Natasha Kai, who was fouled inside the penalty area after taking just one touch. Team captain Joanna Lohman converted on the penalty shot opportunity to give the Bruins the early lead. UCLA sophomore forward Chad Barrett recorded a goal in the seventh minute for the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team in a 2-1 loss to Northern Ireland in the Milk Cup last Friday. Barrett led the team in scoring, notching three of the team’s four goals en route to their sixth place finish.

SOFTBALL: The U.S. Senate passed a resolution on Thursday congratulating the UCLA softball team and the Cal State Fullerton baseball team for winning an NCAA Championship. The resolution was introduced by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and co-sponsored by Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer.

FISHING: UCLA student Brian Adams won the 17th annual Windansea Boardfishing Tournament on Sunday with a 27-pound white sea bass. The sport requires anglers to fish from their surfboards. Adams baited a live sardine on a 12-pound test line to win the tournament.

DIVING: Sophomore Paige Thompson placed sixth in the women’s 3-meter final at the 2004 Speedo National Diving Championships. She also reached the semi-finals in the 1-meter event.

GOLF: Senior Charlotte Mayorkas was the only golfer to break par en route to her victory at the three-day California Women’s State Championships at Pala Mesa Golf Course. Recent senior John Merrrick has turned professional. Merrick shot a nine-under par 63 in a tournament in Long Beach on Saturday. Now that he has officially lost his amateur status, he becomes eligible to receive prize money.
