Swimming: UCLA swimmers lose two but get qualifying marks
The Bruin swimmers swam fast this weekend, but not fast enough.
Despite dominating all of her events in both meets, Kim Vandenberg could not carry the team alone as the No. 11 Bruins fell to both No. 5 Stanford on Friday (176-124) and No. 10 Cal on Saturday (161-139).
UCLA has now fallen to 2-22 all-time against the Cardinal and 9-14 against Cal.
The losses are disappointing for UCLA (5-3, 2-3 Pac-10), but many individual members made an impact in their personal careers by swimming NCAA qualifying times.
In all, 21 NCAA qualifying marks were posted, 12 on Friday and nine on Saturday.
In the pool on Saturday, Vandenberg swam an “A” mark in the 200-yd butterfly with a time of 1:57.37, capturing a win in that event, along with repeat wins in the 100-yd butterfly and the 200-yd freestyle.
Senior Kim Scarborough posted an “A” qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing second in the race with a time of 2:04.73.
Other event winners against the Bears were Jane Imagane (1000 Free, 9:54.21), Nicolette Teo (200 Breast, 2:16.43) and Jeana Fuccillo (400 IM, 4:18.71).
The Bruin divers captured the top three spots in both the one-meter and three-meter competition against the Bears.
Junior Amanda Blong took both the one- and three-meter dives.
Against Stanford, junior Paige Thompson finished third in both the one-meter (233.62) and three-meter (272.25) competition.
In another stellar performance, Blong finished just behind Thompson in the one-meter with a score of 231.60, but neither Thompson nor Blong could help the Bruins surpass the Cardinal.
In two weeks, the Bruins face crosstown rival USC.
The Trojans will host the meet on Saturday, Feb. 12.
