Speaks Out - Online Special

Speaking out on the day of protest S. Sue Johnson Chair of the UC Board of Regents "I urge that the debate over SP-1 take place in a calm and careful manner that will not slow the progress we have made in expanding the accessibillity and affordability of a UC education." William Bagley Regent "I am desperately afraid that if the protests get out of hand they would be seriously unproductive. There are regents who would be supportive of repealing SP-1 but would not want to feel pressured into voting for it. The more you try to force a vote, the less likely it is to be affirmative." Albert Carnesale Chancellor "These protests indicate the great importance that students at UCLA assign to diversity. I certainly hope that they can stay peaceful; that's certainly what I expect. I have great faith in the UCLA students. My concern is the others who may participate." Ward Connerly Regent "They have a right to protest, I just wish they were more informed. We can't restore preferences. Enrollment is not down because of discrimination. They want us to get them in no matter what. The regents do not create the problem, K-12 education does." Cruz Bustamente California Lt. Governor "What we're talking about here is not just something symbolic ... we're talking about something that is an unwelcome mat. It's an unwelcome mat and it has provided a barrier to many students coming into the University of California. What we're hoping is by eliminating SP-1 and 2 that we'll open up not only the eyes of the university and the regents but the eyes of a community who has felt that they have not been able to have access to the University of California."
