Editorial: The field is greener on the other side of L.A.

Because of a lack of willingness on the part of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum’s operating commission to relinquish long-term control of the stadium, the University of Southern California has been forced either to agree to a contract of use not to exceed a length of two years or seek a new home.

As a result, the rival Trojan athletic department has expressed interest in using the Rose Bowl, UCLA’s current home field, for all of it’s home matchups.

Though the two teams at one time shared the Coliseum as a home stadium, the circumstances of the proposed move for USC are quite different.

When the rival schools shared a home turf, the Coliseum was the only venue of adequate size available in the entire Los Angeles area for either to use.

At that time, the scheduling of college football games was far less complex, with only a fraction of the number of games played that are scheduled currently.

Furthermore, USC’s proposed move is unacceptable because it is not one of necessity, but rather one of convenience, as the Trojans have not been asked to leave the Coliseum, but rather are threatening to do so out of stubbornness.
