Ackerman, Kerckhoff to extend study hours

Ackerman, Kerckhoff to extend study hours

By Cari Brooks

Toward the end of the quarter, many students face the onset of pressure and stress with finals on the horizon.

As students race around campus in a nervous studying frenzy, many may complain that even their apartments or dorms are too noisy to study.

But now, students can stop worrying about the loud roommate with extended study hours in Ackerman and Kerckhoff.

During 10th and finals week, students will have new hours and extra days for studying, said Jay Goss, operations manager for Ackerman Student Union.

The Treehouse and Kerckhoff study lounges on the second and third floor will be open until 3 a.m. starting the Friday of ninth week, and continuing until the Thursday of finals week.

The new hours will be beneficial, students said. However many were concerned about the availability of campus escorts to walk students to their cars and dorms.

"I think that the new hours are good ... but I live in the dorms and I don't want to walk back to the dorms by myself," said Stefanie Lin, a second-year undeclared student.

Currently, Community Service Officers will be available and staffed officers will be in the study lounges from midnight to 3 a.m, Goss said.

Tamara Carr, a member of the ASUCLA board of directors, was the catalyst for the extended study hours in Ackerman and Kerckhoff said Madeline Biesty, undergraduate facilities commissioner.

"She worked on this since the beginning of the year," Biesty said.

But in addition to the extended study hours in student association buildings, Biesty and undergraduate president Rob Greenhalgh are also aiming for extended study hours in all campus libraries.

However, the decision for libraries to stay open until 3 a.m. is still in debate.

Greenhalgh and Biesty are currently working with Chancellor Young to find the funding to keep campus libraries open that late.

"I'm confident Towell will remain open during these times if at all possible," Greenhalgh said.
