Just 19 miles offshore Long Beach, Catalina Island is a world apart from Los Angeles. Buffaloes roam as visitors can hike, snorkel, or scuba dive.

An operating train and subway depot, Union Station is a landmark that works for a living. It boasts award-winning architecture and an interesting, if controversial history.

In an Olvera Street restaurant, mariachis serenade diners who can also shop at the site of Los Angeles’s earliest european settlement.

Providing expansive views of the LA Basin, Griffith Observatory is the backdrop for numerous films; inside is a museum and a planetarium.

Located above the 405, the Getty Center showcases both its architecture and its art. On clear days, visitors can see from Big Bear to Catalina.
