SAGE Disruptions Members of the Students Association of Graduate Employees (SAGE/UAW) caused more disruptions than were apparently planned in last week's three-day strike. Secondhand reports to university police officers claimed that during a march on Thursday, May 22, one of the protesters was allegedly seen carrying a small-caliber weapon near the Hilgard bus turnaround. No one was charged with carrying the weapon, nor were any weapons recovered from the protesters. Earlier in the strike, NCAA officials complained to the university police that protesters at the top of Bruin Walk could have disrupted the NCAA Tennis Championship at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Wednesday, May 21. The contest continued as scheduled after morning crowds at the top of Bruin Walk thinned out throughout the day. In addition, strikers allegedly attempted to prevent a truck from unloading its cargo at the Bombshelter Deli unloading dock at around 8:30 a.m. last Wednesday. Crews eventually unloaded their goods after strikers dispersed from the scene. Loitering University police reported that five to six juveniles had refused to disperse from the vicinity of the Village Expressmart on Le Conte Avenue on Wednesday, May 21 at around 1:30 p.m. The juveniles were apparently loitering and blocking customers' access to the driveway and parking lot of the convenience store. When asked to leave by security personnel hired by the store, university police reported "belligerent" behavior, after which the store's attendant requested aid from the university police. Officers dispatched to the scene broke up the small gathering. No arrests or charges were reported against the juveniles. Attempted Suicide An unknown victim was found in Sproul Hall on Sunday, May 25, allegedly attempting to take their own life by overdosing on drugs. Emergency medical technicians responding to the scene reported that the victim had suffered a possible drug overdose, and was then transported to the UCLA emergency room for treatment. University police booked a note as evidence of the attempt. Compiled from the UCPD Media Log between May 19 and May 28 by John Digrado, Daily Bruin Senior Staff.
