Comic-Con 2007

Masquerade Ball

Posted July 30, 2007

One of the highlights of Comic-Con is a masquerade ball that takes place on Saturday night. People come dressed to the nines to mix and mingle with fellow fanatics. And for those not content to just sway to the music, there is a stage for those seeking extra attention. Here is a ranking of the top five most attention-grabbing revelers at the masquerade.

No. 1: Imagine “Harry Potter” meets “Grease” – substituting Malfoy for Danny and Hermione for Sandy. Their excellent choreography trumped the average costumes.

No. 2: Josie and the Pussycat Dolls consisted of six women in the guise of feline comics characters (including Catwoman, Shadowcat and Black Cat). The real fun started when Tony the Tiger, the Cheshire Cat and Felix the Cat took the stage to sing a parody of the Beastie Boys’ “Check It Out”.

No. 3: “Five Star Stories” anime was the inspiration for five women whose headdresses alone represented more time and labor than half the other contestants combined.

No. 4: Devastator from “Transformers” – blocky and 4 colors, just as robots should be. (I’m looking at you, Michael Bay.)

No. 5: A woman who evidently misunderstood the theme of Comic-Con took the stage with a painfully mediocre performance of capoeira – a Brazilian martial art. But with the moxie of that girl from “Little Miss Sunshine,” she performed her uncoordinated heart out. She might not be the best dancer, or the most physically fit, but she sure has a lot of heart.
