In the first year of a new nominating process meant to revitalize the perennially criticized Grammys, the National Academy of the Recording Arts and Sciences voted with an exclamation mark Wednesday night, bestowing four awards upon "alternative" rocker Alanis Morissette and none to "mainstream" favorite Mariah Carey.

Morissette took home awards for best album and best rock album for "Jagged Little Pill," while her single "You Oughta Know" garnered her awards for best rock song and female rock vocal performance. Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" won song and record of the year, and the artist was named best male pop vocal performance. Hootie and the Blowfish won best new artist of the year.

"This award does not represent the fact that I'm better than any other women that were nominated with me but it does represent a lot of people connected to what I wrote," said Morissette after winning best female rock performance.

TLC, Stevie Wonder and Vince Gill all received two Grammys each. TLC won best R&B album for the trio's "Crazysexycool" and best group vocal performance for "Creep." Wonder's "For Your Love" took best R&B vocal performance and song.

In the rap category, Naughty by Nature won best album for "Poverty's Paradise" and the best rap solo award went to Coolio for "Gangsta's Paradise."

In the rock category, Tom Petty's "You Don't Know How it Feels" took best male vocal performance while Blues Traveler's "Run Around" won best group vocal performance.

Nirvana won the best alternative performance trophy for "MTV Unplugged in New York." Nine Inch Nails took home the best metal performance prize for "Happiness in Slavery" and Pearl Jam's "Spin the Black Circle" won for best hard-rock performance.

"I don't know what this means. I don't think it means anything. That's how I feel," said Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder as he accepted his award. "My dad would have liked it. But my dad died before I got to know him ... Thanks, I guess."
