Regents not all bad

The article titled "Regents misrepresent UC's diverse people" (Nov. 19) fails to mention that the regents must be confirmed by the state Senate. While I agree with the main idea of the article, that too much power is given to an elite few, the regent selection process does possess checks and balances, as do many other appointment systems in government.

However, more diverse and unpoliticized representation is needed to keep close at hand what the educational system was designed for: the quality education of California's diverse population of students.
