Combination therapy effective for cancer

When paired with chemotherapy, Avastin, a drug that cuts off a tumor’s blood supply, has been found effective in the treatment of colorectal cancer, according to a UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center study.

Avastin may also be used in the management of lung, breast and pancreatic cancers.

Colon cancers are the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

Nursing home folks spend too much time in bed

A study conducted by the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and the Jewish Home for the Aging has found that, most likely due to limited care staff, many nursing home residents spend an average of 15 to 18 hours each day in bed.

Residents that stayed in bed for extended periods of time were found to be more isolated, sleep more, and eat less. These factors could accelerate decline of health and physical impairments.
