Weyburn Terrace openings delayed
Construction delays will further postpone the move-in date at several units in a Westwood university apartment complex originally scheduled to be completed this summer.
Weyburn Terrace will house about 1,400 single graduate students when complete, but the opening of Aloe, Olive and Sycamore Courts in the complex – slated to open today – will not begin until Nov. 16, said UCLA Housing Director Michael Foraker in an e-mail.
According to UCLA Housing’s Web site, updated Oct. 7, Olive Court will be the first to open, followed by Sycamore Court on Nov. 22. Aloe Court will not open until Jan. 3, 2005, the same day students are now expected to move into Cypress Court, which was scheduled before to open Dec. 1.
Three of seven units in the complex opened between July and September, but only after a series of delays forced graduate students to move in later than anticipated.
The delays made Housing put some students temporarily in families-only university apartments south of campus during the summer. Some of those students opted to move into Weyburn Terrace in mid-September, a month after their academic year began.
In earlier interviews, Foraker said because Housing is dependent on contractors’ schedules, it is often difficult to predict the exact time line for any given construction project. In the case of Weyburn Terrace, contractors reported difficulty in securing materials like plywood, steel and concrete, he said earlier.
