UCLA pitcher Adam Simon pitched the first three innings for the Bruins in Tuesday night’s 8

The UCLA baseball team took advantage of five San Diego errors to score runs in all but the fifth inning en route to an 8-5 win Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

It is the first time the Bruins have won consecutive games since early February.

Down 5-4 in the sixth inning, pinch-hitter Eric Taylor led off with his first home run of the year, a blast down the left field line that hooked inside the foul pole to tie the game.

The next batter, Josh Roenicke, reached base on an error by Torero shortstop Ryan Lilly and went to second on the play.

Sean Carpenter sacrificed him to third and Chris Jensen hit a long sacrifice fly to center that scored Roenicke to give the Bruins a lead they would not relinquish.

The game started poorly for UCLA as the first two Toreros reached base against starter Adam Simon and were promptly knocked in by a Shane Buschini double.

The Bruins responded with single runs in the first four innings, but the Toreros kept pace with runs of their own in the second and fourth. Buschini led off the fifth inning with a towering home run to right field off of Bruin reliever Brendan Lafferty to make the score 5-4, but that would be the last run San Diego would score.

Brian Schroeder pitched three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen to earn the win. Schroeder (3-5) came into a jam with runners on first and second with one out in the sixth and got some help from catcher Chris Denove, who threw out Logan Gelbrich on the back end of a double steal. Schroeder retired Keoni Ruth on a weak groundball to end the inning and finish off the game, allowing only one hit to go along with three walks.
